Solid surface countertops have been around for over 50 years. Its popularity peaked at the turn of the century but is on a steady decrease as granite and quartz continue to climb. Solid surface countertops look more man made, but unlike stone, it is non-porous. Non-porous materials will make the counters less prone to cracking and breaking. This also will help keep bacteria away, promoting a cleaner and more sanitary countertop. This is also a feature on quartz countertops.
Solid surface countertops are made of the same solid material throughout. They are made of acrylic or polyurethane. It is a seamless counter because the joints are bonded with the same material and then blended by sanding and buffing. Because the pieces are just epoxied together and then blended, some pretty elaborate configurations can be designed. Solid surface counters are somewhat flexible which makes it resist impact better.
Solid surface countertops can scratch fairly easily, but it is repairable. Since it is the same material throughout it can be re-sanded and re-buffed bringing it back to its original state. The cost of solid surface is similar to granite. Granite being more durable has made solid surface trail behind.
